Air Fryer Potato Crowns

When making frozen foods in the air fryer, it seems to make them taste even better. It gives them a crispy texture that you don’t always get with the oven.

I like to keep a bag of crispy crowns in my freezer for convenience. They are great to use when I am running short on time and need food in a hurry. I just toss them right into the preheater air fryer and BAM they are done in minutes. It’s the quickest way to cook them.

They make a great breakfast…just dunk them right in some ketchup! Or dinner…add them into a bean and cheese burrito with some salsa and sour cream for a delicious meal.

Making crispy crowns in the air fryer is my favorite way to make them. They end up a golden color with crunch on the outside and a soft inside. They are crispy perfection!

This is such an easy recipe and your family is going to devour these potato bites.

What are Crispy Crowns?

Crispy crowns are seasoned shredded potatoes that are pretty much extra crispy tater tots that get pressed into a roundish shape! They get deep fried and then frozen. Usually, you can find crispy crowns next to the Ore-Ida tater tots or Ore-Ida frozen fries (any ore-ida products) in the freezer aisle at the grocery store.

Sometimes they are called potato puffs or tater puffs by other brands.

Our favorite brand to use is Ore-Ida golden Crispy Crowns. They can pretty much be substituted in any recipe where you would use frozen tater tots.

Why we love this Air Fryer Recipe

Our favorite things about this recipe are that it is a quick way to make mini tater tots and clean up is pretty easy when you use the air fryer.

  • Super versatile. This potato side dish works so well in a lot of different recipes or eat them on their own.
  • Healthier than deep fry. It is much healthier to air fry crispy crowns rather than using a deep fryer.
  • Delicious. They work well for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snack!
  • Fun for kids. If you have picky kids, this is a great recipe. Kids have so much fun eating them.

How to Cook Crispy Crowns in Oven

It’s fine if you don’t have an air fryer because I have the instructions of how to make crispy crowns in the oven, also.

  1. Preheat the oven to 425° F. Line an 11″x17″ baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Lay frozen crispy crowns in a single layer on the baking sheet.
  3. Cook 1/2 bag for 16-18 minutes. Full bag will heat for 23-25 minutes.
  4. Let cool a couple minutes before enjoying.

Recipe Tips and Variations

  • Don’t overlap. When adding crowns to the air fryer, try to keep them in a single layer in the bottom of the basket, it’s okay if they touch. If they are piled on top of each other it will take them longer to cook and you will have to shake the basket multiple times.
  • No extra oil needed. When making potato puffs, no additional cooking spray or olive oil spray is needed. They have already been deep fried in plenty of oil, no need to add more.
  • Season after cooking. If you want to add seasoning to your crispy potato crowns, add it after you air fry them.
  • Full bag instructions. If you are planning on cooking the whole bag of crispy crowns, you will need to cook in batches.
  • A little crunchier. If you like your crispy crowns even more crispy, just add 1-2 extra minutes of cooking time. Just be careful that the food doesn’t burn. You can also check on the food at any point to make sure it is cooking to your liking, just open the air fryer and check.
