What are Crispy Crowns?

Crispy crowns are seasoned shredded potatoes that are pretty much extra crispy tater tots that get pressed into a roundish shape! They get deep fried and then frozen. Usually, you can find crispy crowns in the freezer aisle at the grocery store.

Sometimes they are called potato puffs or tater puffs by other brands.

Our favorite brand to use is Ore-Ida Crispy Crowns (not sponsored). They can pretty much be substituted in any recipe where you would use frozen tater tots.

Why we love this recipe

Our favorite things about this recipe are that it is a quick way to make mini tater tots and clean up is pretty easy when you use the air fryer.

  • Super versatile. This potato side dish works so well in a lot of different recipes or eat them on their own.
  • Healthier than deep fry. It is much healthier to air fry crispy crowns rather than using a deep fryer.
  • Delicious. They work well for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snack!
  • Fun for kids. If you have picky kids, this is a great recipe. Kids have so much fun eating them.

What to Serve with Golden Crispy Crowns

When we aren’t eating these crowns in burritos, I like to serve them with some fresh cut up fruit or cook up some easy veggies like these.

  • Air Fryer Brussels Sprouts with Bacon
  • Air Fryer Roasted Broccoli
  • Squash and Zucchini in Air Fryer

Of course, they are delicious on their own dipped in some dip. We like ketchup, bbq sauce, chipotle mayo, beer cheese dip, or even ranch.

How to Cook Crispy Crowns in the Oven

It’s fine if you don’t have an air fryer because I have the instructions of how to make crispy crowns in the oven, also.

  1. Preheat the oven to 425° F. Line an 11″x17″ baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Lay frozen crispy crowns in a single layer on the baking sheet.
  3. Cook 1/2 bag for 16-18 minutes. Full bag will heat for 23-25 minutes.
  4. Let cool a couple minutes before enjoying.

Recipe Tips and Variations

  • Don’t overlap. When adding crowns to the air fryer, try to keep them in a single layer in the bottom of the basket, it’s okay if they touch. If they are piled on top of each other it will take them longer to cook and you will have to shake the basket multiple times.
  • No extra oil needed. When making potato puffs, no additional cooking spray or olive oil spray is needed. They have already been deep fried in plenty of oil, no need to add more.
  • Season after cooking. If you want to add seasoning to your crispy potato crowns, add it after you air fry them.
  • Full bag instructions. If you are planning on cooking the whole bag of crispy crowns, you will need to cook in batches.
  • A little crunchier. If you like your crispy crowns even more crispy, just add 1-2 extra minutes of cooking time. Just be careful that the food doesn’t burn. You can also check on the food at any point to make sure it is cooking to your liking, just open the air fryer and check.
