When I am making a breakfast with French toast I love to serve it up with a big ol’ side of fresh fruit. You can make the French toast on its own for a hearty meal, but its so great to eat with scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, sausage, or bacon.
What Bread to Use for French Toast?
To have great tasting French toast, you need to start off with great ingredients. The basis for French toast is scrumptious bread. You need a bread that is sturdy so that it can soak up all the French toast liquids.
This would be a great time to use day old bread French or Italian bread that you have. If your bread is a little dry, it is going to hold up well to being soaked.
You can use pre-sliced bread or if you buy the bread in a loaf just slice it into 1-inch slices.
Here is a list of the best breads to use for French toast.
- Challah
- Brioche
- Texas Toast
- Ciabatta bread
- Sourdough bread
- French bread
- Italian bread
You don’t want to use regular sandwich bread because it isn’t as sturdy as some of the other options. If you get the right bread, you will no doubt end up with the perfect French toast.
Toppings for French Toast
There are so many different toppings to add to make delicious French toast even better. The classic is to add melty butter and some gooey syrup but, my kids love it with powdered sugar. Here are some options for to choose from.
- Butter
- Maple syrup or pancake syrup
- Fruit like blueberries, raspberries or sliced up strawberries or bananas
- Fruit syrups like strawberry syrup, blueberry syrup, or raspberry syrup
- Whipped cream
- Jam, jelly, apple butter, or pumpkin butter
- Spiced syrup
- Chocolate chips
- Lemon curd
McCormick French Toast Ingredients
- Egg: You will want the egg to be at room temperature so that it combines well with the other custard ingredients.
- Vanilla Extract: Use a real vanilla extract, this will add a nice flavor to the French toast.
- Cinnamon: Ground cinnamon, just check the date to make sure it’s fresh.
- Milk: I use full fat milk, but low fat milk will work also.
