The Best Air Fryer London Broil Recipe
My family loves eating steak, the problem is that it is just too expensive to have very often. Luckily, there is a more affordable way to eat steak…make London Broil! It is made with a cheaper cut of steak but when cooked correctly comes out tender and juicy.
If you are a fan of London broil, then you have to try cooking London Broil in the air fryer.
Since this steak is a leaner cut of meat, it is absolutely imperative to marinate London broil, otherwise it may come out hard and chewy. The marinating is where all the magic happens. The lemon juice in the marinade helps to break down the tough fibers, making it the perfect texture.
It does take at least four hours to marinate the steak, so make sure you plan ahead.
Best Marinade for London Broil
This really is an easy marinade for London Broil. It is really going to tenderize the meat. It is made with a few pantry staples and some fresh flavors to really make the flavors pop in the steak. I am a sucker for fresh garlic and use it everywhere I can. You will find fresh lemon juice in here too, salty Worcestershire sauce, and fresh rosemary.
I like to mix all the ingredients for the marinade and toss the raw steak into it the night before or first thing in the morning so that when dinnertime rolls around I just throw this steak right into the air fryer and dinner is done in mere minutes.
What is London Broil?
London broil is actually the way that the steak is prepared, as it is typically broiled in an oven or cooked outside on a grill, you can even sear it in a skillet or cook it in a crockpot.
The cut of the meat is really known as flank steak, skirt steak, or top round. It is typically a leaner cut of meat, so it can be a bit tough until you cook it in the air fryer and turn it into something marvelous. Here is a grilled London broil you can also try.
What Cut of Meat is the Best for London Broil
There are a few different cuts of meat that work well to make London broil. The cuts that are typically used to make it are top round, coulotte, skirt steak or flank steak. The one I used in this recipe was labeled “Top Round London Broil.”
How to Tell When London Broil is Done?
The cooking time on your top round London Broil will vary due to the thickness of the steak. I like to use a meat thermometer to check the inner temperature before serving it. Using a thermometer will ensure the steak is done to your liking without having to cut into it. I like to cook my London Broil to about 135°F, which is medium rare. This cut of meat may toughen up if you cook it for too long.
Follow these temperature guidelines based on how well done you would like your steak to be.
- For rare steak (cool red center)- the internal temperature will be 125°F.
- For medium rare steak (warm red center)- the internal temperature will be around 135°F.
- For medium steak (warm pink center)- the internal temp will be about 145°F.
- For medium well (slightly pink center)- the internal temperature will be 150°F.
- For well done (little or no pink center)- the internal temp will be 160°F.
The USDA recommends steaks and roasts be cooked to 145°F (medium) and then rested for at least 3 minutes. Be sure to check with a thermometer, as color alone is not a foolproof indicator.
What to do with London Broil?
The typical way that we eat London broil is as a main dish served along side a tasty side dish. You can also serve it thinly sliced on top of a giant salad or even added into a sandwich. I like to serve it on top of some mashed potatoes, add it to tacos or quesadillas. You can even use this cut of meat in stews and for fajitas.
What to Serve with London Broil?
The options are pretty endless when trying to pair London broil with side dishes that go well together. So I made a list of some of our favorites. Check them out!
- Potatoes. Almost nothing beats eating a good steak with potatoes. These tangy salt and vinegar smashed potatoes pair especially well. You will feel like you are eating at a steakhouse with these cheesy garlic mashed potatoes!
- Bread. You must have delicious air fryer dinner rolls to serve with your London broil. Or try your hand at making french bread from scratch.
- Vegetables. Gotta get your veggies in there, too. Try this London Broil with air fryer roasted broccoli, brown sugar carrots, roasted asparagus, or street corn. For summer you have to try this, made right in the air fryer!
- Grains. One of our favorite side dishes is this lemon butter rice or this spicy pasta salad.
- Beans. Try out these amazing baked beans, for more of a bbq feel to your London broil. Or make charro beans for a little Mexican flair.
- Salad. This strawberry spinach salad would be excellent right alongside the steak or make this quick Greek salad.
Air Fryer London Broil Ingredients
- Steak: You will need around a 2-3 pound steak, mine was about 2.7 pounds. Some of the cuts you can choose from are flank steak, skirt steak, coulotte, or top round. I used a top round.
- Worcestershire Sauce: Make sure that the Worcestershire is fresh and not expired.
- Oil: I use olive oil, but vegetable oil will also work.
- Lemon: Freshly squeezed lemon juice is a must.
- Garlic: Fresh garlic cloves that have been minced. I love garlic so I use a lot of cloves, but you can reduce the amount.
- Rosemary: Fresh rosemary leaves from a stalk.
- Pepper: Freshly ground pepper is the best.
How to Cook London Broil in Air Fryer

- In a gallon sized zip bag combine together the Worcestershire sauce, olive oil, lemon, garlic, rosemary and pepper. Zip the bag closed and make sure to mix everything together well.
- Add in the steak. Try to get as much air out of the zip bag as possible.
- Put the steak in the fridge for at least 4 hours, flipping over after 2 hours.
- Remove from fridge and let come to room temperature for 20-30 minutes.
- Preheat the air fryer to 400°F.
- Carefully place the meat into the air fryer. Set the cook time and flip halfway through.
- Insert a meat thermometer to make sure the internal temperature is at least 135°F.
- Let steak rest for 10 minutes before slicing against the grain in thin slices.
London Broil Recipe Tips and Variations
- Thicker steak = longer cooking time. The length of cooking time will depend on the thickness of the steak. If the London broil is thicker than 1-inch it will need to be cooked a few extra minutes on each side.
- Must marinate. Do not skip the marinating step, it is imperative to marinate London broil to make it tender.
- Check the steak temperature. Make sure to check the temperature of the top round steak with a meat thermometer to ensure it is at the level of doneness you are wanting.
- Marinate for a few hours. Marinate the meat for at least 4 hours to tenderize the meat completely.
- Room temperature steak. After marinating the steak, allow it to come up to room temperature before cooking it for best results.
- Let the steak rest. After air frying London broil, you want to allow the meat to rest for at least 10 minutes before cutting into it.
- Cut against the grain. When you are cutting the London broil, make sure to slice it against the grain. This means that you cut across the natural lines and not with them.
- Don’t overcook. If you overcook London Broil it will turn out chewy and leathery.
- Do not over marinate. Make sure that you do not marinate London Broil for longer than 24 hours, it will start to toughen the meat up.
- Keep slices thin. Cut the steak in very thin slices. Try to keep them about 1/4 inches thick.
- Variations. Use steak seasoning or a pre-made marinade that you buy at the store.

How to Reheat London Broil in Air Fryer: It is very easy for this steak to dry out in the reheating process. If you add a pat of butter to the top of the steak or a little water it can help keep the steak moist. Add a sprinkling of salt and pepper. Add the steak into the air fryer and cook at 320°F and cook for 6 minutes. Flip steak over and cook for an additional 6 minutes. If you just have small chunks heat for about 4 minutes then flip and cook for 4 more minutes.
