Shhh, no one has to know the truth.
What are Stuffed Pork Chops?
Stuffed pork chops are exactly what they sound like! They are pork chops that are cut into, being careful to not cut it in half, to create a pocket to be filled with tasty goodness.
These yummy air fried stuffed pork chops get sealed with toothpicks to make sure everything gets held in. Then they get cooked up in the air fryer to make a fabulous dinner.
What Temperature is it Safe to Eat Pork?
The best way to ensure that you have pork that is cooked through is to use a digital thermometer to check the temperature. The safe temperature to eat pork is 145°F.
I recommend checking all the pork chops at about the 15 minute mark to see what their temperature is. If you have one chop that is thinner than the others, it is going to reach the 145°F mark before the others. So pull the smaller one out early and let the rest continue cooking.
What is the Best Mozzarella Cheese To Use?
When making these air fryer pork chops, you want to use a really good mozzarella cheese. Get a ball of mozzarella that is fresh. You want to make sure that you shred it yourself. Getting pre-shredded cheese can be made with fillers and it won’t melt as well as shredding it.
How Long to Cook Stuffed Pork Chops in Air Fryer?
Some pork chops are a lot thicker than others. The pork chops I used here were thick, about 2 inches thick (maybe a little bigger) and one of them was bigger than than the other two. This is going to affect the cooking time for your pork chops. When using the thicker ones, it takes about 25 minutes to cook them because we are cooking them at a much lower temperature to prevent them from drying out.
What are the Best Pork Chops to Use?
I like to use boneless pork loin chops for this recipe. I recommend getting pork chops that are about 1 1/2 inches thick for best results.
What to Serve with Pork Chops?
Pork chops go with just about anything. They are really versatile and taste great with a variety of side dishes. I like to serve them up with this easy air fryer squash and zucchini, this basic air fryer acorn squash, or roasted broccoli in the air fryer. These are our favorite air fryer dinner rolls. They would go really well with cheesy garlic mashed potatoes or lemon butter rice. Or make a large green salad for fresh flavor.
How to Cut the Pork Chops
When cutting into the pork chops, I set the pork chops on their side and cut straight down. I like to cut through the side without the fat. You can either cut just a pocket in the very top or you can cut through the top and down the sides. Just be sure to keep the back side attached and don’t cut too far into it.
Stuffed Pork Chops Air Fryer Ingredients
- Pork Chops: I use fresh 3-4 boneless pork loin chops. You want them to be 1 1/2 – 2 inches thick.
- Sun Dried Tomatoes: The ones that are packed in oil, you can rinse them off so that you don’t get all that extra grease.
- Spinach: Fresh, baby spinach.
- Mozzarella Cheese: Use a fresh ball of mozzarella and grate it yourself for best results.
- Olive Oil: Extra virgin olive oil or even vegetable oil will work.
- Italian Seasoning: Dried Italian seasoning is perfect.
- Salt & Pepper: I like using fine sea salt or kosher salt and freshly ground pepper.
How to Cook Stuffed Pork Chops in Air Fryer
- Cut a slit into the pork chops to almost cut them in half but be super careful that you don’t go all the way the back of the chop.
- Divide the sun dried tomatoes between the chops. On top of those add spinach and top that with 2 tablespoons of cheese for each chop.
- Preheat the air fryer for 3 minutes.
- Put 4-5 toothpicks through the top layer of meat and down into the bottom layer to hold in all of the filling.
- Using a basting brush, spread half of the olive oil on the top of each pork chop. Sprinkle on half the salt and pepper. Then add half the Italian seasoning.
- Place pork chops into the air fryer, oiled side down. Oil the other side of the pork chop. And add the rest of the salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning.
- Cook in the air fryer, flipping over after 10 minutes.
- Check the temperature of the center of the pork chop with a digital thermometer. It should read 145°F to be safe to eat.
- Let rest for about 3-5 minutes before enjoying.
Can you Stack Stuffed Pork Chops in an Air Fryer?
The best way to ensure that the pork chops cook evenly all around is to leave space between them. This means that you can not layer these stuffed air fryer pork chops because they won’t cook correctly. I can fit four boneless pork chops in my Cosori 5.8 quart basket style air fryer without them touching or being stacked.
It is okay for the backside (not the side with the stuffing) of the pork chop to touch the sides of the air fryer, it will brown them up a little.
Air Fryer Stuffed Pork Chop Tips & Variations
- Using tooth picks is the best way to keep everything contained in the stuffed pork chops.
- Using a meat thermometer is the best way to check the temperature of the pork chops.
- Don’t stack the pork chops to ensure even cooking, keep them in a single layer.
- Let the pork chops rest before serving them. They may end up tough if you eat them too soon.
- If you prefer a different cheese beside mozzarella, you could switch it up. Just make sure to use a cheese that melts well.
Frequently Asked Questions
What temperature do pork chops get cooked at? Airfryer pork chops need to be cooked in an air fryer that has been preheated to 330°F. Once the air fryer has been preheated, the chops need to be cooked for 18-25 minutes depending on the thickness. We cook them at this lower temperature so that they do not dry out.
How to tell if pork chops have gone bad? If your raw pork chops have been sitting in the fridge for a while they may have gone bad. Keep in mind that fresh, uncooked pork chops will only last about 3-5 days in the refrigerator. Smell and look over the chops before cooking them. If they have turned gray and have a foul odor, then the pork chops have gone bad and you will not want to eat them.
Can frozen pork chops be used? Frozen pork chops that have been thawed will be perfect in this recipe. I don’t recommend using pork chops that are frozen though because they need to be cut and stuffed.
Air Fry Stuffed Pork Chops Storage Instructions
How to refrigerate stuffed pork chops? Let the pork chops cool and put in an air tight container. They should last about 3-4 days in the fridge.
How do you reheat air fryer stuffed pork chops? Pre-heat the air fryer to 350° F. Heat pork chops for 3-4 minutes, until heated through. Keep a close eye on it so that they don’t overcook.
How to freeze stuffed cooked pork chops? Let pork chops cool completely before wrapping in plastic wrap and putting into an air tight, freezer safe container. Pork chops can be frozen for 3 months, just be sure to label with the recipe and date.
How to cook uncooked frozen stuffed pork chops in the air fryer? If you wrapped up the raw prepared pork chops and frozen them, this is how to cook them. Preheat the air fryer to 330°F. Place frozen uncooked pork chop in the air fryer and cook for about 20 minutes. Flip over and continue cooking for an additional 10 minutes. Check the internal temperature with a digital thermometer. It needs to read 145°F, so if it doesn’t then continue cooking until it does.
