Looking for a way to add more tart strawberry flavor into your recipes, then you must check out this sweet obsession of mine…strawberry sugar!

Strawberry sugar is a specialty item that can be bought in baking stores or online, but today I’m going to show you how to make it at home for way cheaper.

If you are a fan of vanilla sugar and cinnamon sugar you are sugar to love this sugar recipe, too.

This fun recipe is a great way to add sweetness and strawberry flavor to a myriad of different recipes!

When I make this strawberry sugar, I use freeze-dried strawberries. They crumble very easily into a fine powder that mixes well with the sugar. If you don’t have a food processor, try adding the strawberries to a ziplock bag (get out as much air as possible) and try crushing with a rolling pin. Or try using a coffee grinder.

Can you buy strawberry sugar already pre-made at the store? Yes, of course you can, but why would you want to buy it when you can make it exactly how you want it in the comfort of your own home.

What is Strawberry Sugar?

If you are wondering what in the heck is strawberry sugar, it is simply sugar that has been flavored with strawberries! It is a simple ingredient that can up the flavor of whatever recipe it is used in.

What does Strawberry Sugar Taste Like?

Since it is made with real strawberries, this sugar tastes like sour strawberries. If you have eaten freeze-dried strawberries then you can imagine what this sugar tastes like. The flavor is a bit tart and tangy, no fake strawberry flavor here.

How to Use Strawberry Sugar?

There are soooo many ways to use homemade strawberry sugar. Here are some ways we love to use it. Let me know in the comments how you use strawberry sugar.

  • Candy – Sprinkle on homemade candy and confections
  • Drinks – Use on the rim of a cocktail glasses, drink glass or mix into your favorite beverages.
  • Desserts – Use on ice cream, cupcakes, breads, muffins, quick strawberry shortcake, strawberry sugar cookies and any Valentines Day treats
  • Breakfast – Put on oatmeal, pancakes, waffles, French toast, yogurt, on buttered toast, or fresh fruit.
  • Sweet Treat – Make strawberry cream cheese or strawberry whipped cream.
  • Gifts – Put in a glass jar and tie a ribbon around it to give as a gift

What Kind of Strawberries to Use?

Fresh strawberries have way too much liquid to use here. So, the best kind of strawberries to use in this recipe are freeze-dried strawberries. Use dried strawberries that don’t have any added sugar.

What Kind of Sugar to Use?

I like to use sugar that has not been run through bone char, the brand I like is Zulka (not sponsored, just love it). Any granulated sugar will work perfectly.

How to Make Strawberry Sugar

Check out the recipe card at the bottom of this post for full instructions.

  • Add the berries: Add dried strawberries to the food processor.
  • Pulverize strawberries: Run the food processor until the strawberries are finely ground. This may take a few minutes. Check on them periodically.
  • Add the sugar: Add the sugar on top of the ground strawberries and run for a few seconds until well combined. Don’t run it for too long because the food processor will start to break down the sugar.
  • Store: Keep in an airtight container until ready to use.
Step by step instructions to make sugar.

Tips for Success

  • Finely grind the strawberries before adding the sugar to the food processor.
  • If the sugar starts to clump up after being stored, just re-stir it to loosen it back up.

Recipe Variations

  • If you don’t have a food processor, crush strawberries in a zip bag or use a coffee grinder. Then add the strawberry powder to a large bowl and mix in with the sugar.
  • If you want this recipe to be sweeter, add more sugar. If you want more strawberry flavor, add more strawberries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use fresh strawberries? No, this recipe is made with freeze dried strawberries not fresh strawberries.

Can I use dehydrated strawberries instead? Dehydrated or oven dried strawberries, won’t work in this recipe. They still have too much liquid.

Is this sugar recipe vegan? Did you know that most granulated sugar is not vegan? Most sugar companies run their white sugar through bone char to get that white color that it’s known for. And since most brown sugar is just white sugar with molasses added to it, that means that it also is not vegan. To make this recipe vegan, just use an organic cane sugar.

How to Store Leftovers

How to keep strawberry sugar at room temperature? Store leftover strawberry sugar in an airtight container. It will last for up to 6 months. Just make sure to label with the date.
