What is Mississippi Sin Dip?
Mississippi sin dip is heaven in a loaf of French bread, which is pretty ironic, right?! You may be wondering why it’s called “sin dip.” Well, that’s because it is full of some rather sinful ingredients and tastes like you are doing something wrong just by eating it!
Who can pass up a cheesy goodness, salty meat, and a sprinkling of green onions served with bread?
PRO TIP! Make it in a baking dish or a large cast iron skillet in the oven instead of the bread bowl.
Why Make Mississippi Sin Dip
- Delicious. This is one of our favorite dips because it is seriously good!
- Portable. This cheese dip can be taken anywhere. It’s the perfect snack all in a large bread bowl.
- Use up leftover ham. It’s great way to use up ham that’s leftover from the holidays.
- I think the greater question here is why not make Mississippi sin dip!
What to Serve with Sin Dip
Basically any “dipper” you can think of will work here. Pick your fave and go dunk it!
- Chips. Serve this dip with any chip you can imagine! Tortilla chips, corn chips, pita chips, or potato chips.
- Bread. I like to use the scooped out middle of the french bread, toasted bread slices, naan, or pita bread.
- Crackers. Saltine crackers, ritz crackers, club crackers, woven wheat crackers, or wheat thins.
- Pretzels. Heat up some large soft pretzels or homemade pretzel bites. Or from the grocery store buy a bag of pretzel rods, miniature pretzels, or pretzel sticks.
- Vegetables. Make a crudités (pronounced kroo-dee-teh), which is a tray of veggies that are ready to be dunked into dip. Think carrots sticks, celery sticks, bell peppers, radishes, or cucumber slices.
- Alongside meats. Make to go with deli turkey, ham, or roast beef. It would be excellent with brats or chicken sausage.
- Baked potato. Put this dip in a medium bowl at the baked potato bar and add it on top of baked potatoes.
- This tangy dip can also be put on things like sandwiches, hamburgers, or hot dogs.
Mississippi Sin Dip Ingredients
Here are the simple ingredients needed to make crack dip. For full ingredient amounts just check out the full recipe in the recipe card at the bottom of this blog post.
- Hollowed-out loaf of bread: If you are using a bread bowl, you will need a round loaf of bread, an oval bread loaf, or a long loaf of French bread loaf or Italian bread loaf. Use interior bread pieces as dippers, but keep enough bread so the bowl is sturdy.
- Package Cream Cheese: Cream cheese adds a thick texture and flavor to the dip. I recommend using full fat cream cheese, I mean it is a sin dip. Leave out at room temperature a couple hours before you want to start the recipe.
- Sour Cream: Sour cream adds that tangy flavor. Make sure to pull it out early to bring it to room temperature.
- Ham: Cut it into small cubes. I get the ham steaks, it makes it very easy to cut into bite-sized pieces. You can also use leftover holiday ham or deli ham.
- Cheese: You want to use sharp cheddar cheese or extra sharp cheddar that you shred yourself.
- Hot Sauce: This adds a bit of heat. If you have picky eaters you can leave it out.
- Green Onions: Add a bit of a fresh onion flavor and are just for garnish on top, they are optional.
How to Make Mississippi Sin Dip
It’s easy to make this delicious dip. Here are the basic instructions, check out the recipe card below for full directions.
STEP 1: Preheat the oven.
STEP 2: Cut the top of the bread loaf with a serrated knife and remove leaving at least 1 inch on the sides and the bottom. I like to cut the extra bread into slices and serve with the dip (or make into croutons for salad). Place the bread on a baking sheet.
STEP 3: In the bowl of a stand mixer, or a large bowl with a hand mixer, combine together cream cheese, sour cream, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and 1 1/2 cups of the shredded cheese (save 1/2 cup to sprinkle on top).
STEP 4: Add in chopped ham and mix in on low speed until combined.
STEP 5: With a rubber spatula, scrape all of the cheese mixture into the hollowed-out loaf. Add reserved 1/2 cup of shredded cheese to the top of the dip mixture, then the green onions.
STEP 6: Rub a little butter or olive oil to the center of a piece of aluminum foil on the dull side, this will keep the cheese from sticking to the foil. Wrap loaf with foil, you can try to leave a little space between the top of the bread and the foil also. If using an iron skillet or baking dish, it doesn’t need to be covered with foil.
STEP 7: Bake the bread. Enjoy hot!
Can Mississippi Sin Dip be Made in Slow Cooker?
Yes, it is super simple to make this creamy dip in a crock pot instead of in the oven. Just put all of the mixed ingredients into the slow cooker and cook on high for 2 hours.
Recipe Tips & Variations
- Inside bread. Use the cut out portion of the bread loaf to use to dip into the dip.
- Bacon. Yes, you can make Mississippi sin dip with salty bacon! Just add 1 cup of cooked and crumbled bacon instead of diced ham.
- Sausage. Make Mississippi sin dip with sausage instead of ham. Great way to use up leftover breakfast sausage. Add in 1 cup of sausage to the dip.
- Green Chiles. Add in a small can of green chilies or canned jalapeños to the ham dip to add a little more spice.
- Be careful cutting the loaf. Make sure to leave a 1-inch layer of bread all the way around and make sure not to stab through the loaf to keep it from leaking.
- Add a little kick. Use red pepper flakes to make this dip a little more spicy. Or add garlic powder or onion powder for a little more flavor to our favorite dip.
- Ditch the bread bowl. Instead of the bread bowl use a large serving bowl.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make Mississippi sin dip without bread? Yes! Mississippi sin dip does not have to be made in bread loaf. It can also be made in an iron skillet, casserole dish or baking dish.
Can dip be made ahead of time? If you need to make this in advance, make the inside of the dip and store it in the fridge until you need to cook it.
Is this dip spicy? With the added hot sauce, this dip has a bit of a kick. If you prefer just leave out the hot sauce or use a mild hot sauce.
How long can this party dip sit out? As a general rule of thumb for food safety, a perishable item shouldn’t sit out for more than 2 hours. I recommend that you let the dip sit out for no more than 2-3 hours before it needs to be refrigerated. Just keep this in mind if you are bringing it to a bbq or for your own get-together. Start a timer or set an alarm to remind you to put it away.
