Healthy Green Smoothie Recipe
If it is your first time trying a green smoothie, this is a great recipe to start with especially if you are a fan of lemons. This one is sweet, but mellow and super creamy. The lemon juice gives a bit of tartness, while adding in lemon zest gives that lemon flavor.
I have been a long time lover of green smoothies. I love the idea of mixing some greens (that may not taste that great on their own) up with sweet fruit to make a tasty drink that is great for your health. Adding lemon gives it a zingy flavor and gives you a natural energy boost.
And guess what, my kids love them and actually beg me to make them. If that isn’t proof that they are delicious, I don’t know what is! Plus, it’s a great way to get them to “eat” even more veggies.
Creamy Lemon Smoothie Recipe
If you have a sensitivity to almond milk, you can use any plant based substitute like coconut milk, coconut water, oat milk, or soy milk. Plain water can also be used or regular milk. For a thinner consistency add a little more liquid than what I have listed in the recipe card.
The greek yogurt adds some protein and healthy fat to this creamy lemon smoothie, making this hearty enough to eat for a meal. Sometimes I will add a scoop of vanilla protein powder for an extra protein boost.
Making this smoothie during the summer months to drink as a to go breakfast, is a great way to stay hydrated and keep cool on a hot day.
Lemon Smoothie Add Ins
Here are some add ins for additional health benefits or flavor to add to one of my favorite smoothies.
- Fresh ginger
- Protein powder
- Collagen peptides
- Bee pollen
- Hemp seeds
- Chia seeds
- Ground flax seeds
- Powdered or liquid vitamins
Can I make this Lemon Smoothie Vegan?
If you are wonder if you can make this lemon smoothie vegan, the answer is yesss! It is so super simple to switch this recipe up and make it a vegan lemon smoothie! Just switch out the honey (or leave it out the sweetener completely if you are feeling daring) for one of the options below and the yogurt for vegan yogurt.
Some honey substitutions that we love
Since honey is not vegan friendly, here are some great honey subs.
- Maple syrup: An obvious substitution that most people have on hand.
- Homemade “hunee”: You can make your own honey at home, completely bee free.
- Brown rice syrup: Not as sweet as honey, which makes it a great sub if you want your smoothie less sweet.
- Sorghum syrup: Just as sweet as honey.
- Barley malt syrup: Has a malty flavor and also isn’t as sweet as honey.
- Agave nectar: Behaves just like honey, but isn’t the healthiest option.
Some Vegan Yogurts that we Love
So many brands out there are now making a vegan option available. I really like the coconut based ones. Here are some of the options of vegan yogurt brands or just make your own yogurt.
- Yoplait Oui: Vanilla Coconut Dairy Free Alternative Vanilla Yogurt
- Follow Your Heart: Dairy-free Vanilla Bean Yogurt
- Trader Joe’s Vegan Yogurt: Cultured Coconut Milk Vanilla Yogurt
- Kite Hill: Decadent Vanilla Bean Dairy Free Creamy Coconut Milk Yogurt
- Daiya: Vanilla Bean Yogurt Alternative
- Chobani: Non-Dairy Vanilla Yogurt
- Cocojune: Organic Cultured Vanilla Camomile Coconut Yogurt
- Blue Diamond Almond Breeze: Almondmilk Vanilla Yogurt
- Harmless Harvest: Organic Dairy Free Vanilla Coconut Yogurt Alternative
- Whole Foods 365: Vanilla Almond Milk Non-Dairy Vanilla Yogurt
How to Freeze Bananas?
Ok, this is my favorite way to freeze bananas so that they are super easy to use in smoothie recipes at any time. I peel them and then slice them into bite size chunks. Next, I toss them into a large freezer safe plastic zip bag or container. I put that right into the freezer to use whenever I need frozen bananas (which is like a lot!).
No frozen bananas, no problem! It’s not absolutely necessary to use frozen bananas in this recipe. You can use fresh bananas and just throw in a cup or so of ice instead to replace the frozenness of the banana.

Lemon Smoothie Ingredients
- Avocado: Avocado makes smoothies go from just eh to WOW! It gives a smoothness and creaminess unlike anything else.
- Lettuce: A pale lettuce is used to keep the smoothie a nice light color. I like to use butter lettuce. You could also use light green romaine, Bibb lettuce, little gems lettuce, Batavia lettuce, dandelion greens, or watercress.
- Yogurt: I use unflavored, plain greek yogurt (Fage is my fave). Vegan yogurt would be delicious also, some vegan options are above.
- Lemons: Of course there are lemons in this lemon smoothie. We use the juice and zest to add flavor of one whole lemon.
- Honey: This is optional but makes this smoothie more of a dessert smoothie.
- Almond Milk: Any nut milks can be used, dairy milk, coconut water, or just plain water.
- Bananas: You want to use frozen bananas in this smoothie recipe. Can use fresh plus some ice instead.
How to Make a Lemon Smoothie
Here are the simple instructions on how to make a lemon smoothie, check out the recipe card below for the full ingredients and instructions.
- Add into the blender in this order: the avocado, lettuce, yogurt, lemon juice, lemon zest, honey, almond milk, and frozen banana. If using fresh bananas add them in first before the avocado and the ice in last.
- Start blender on low and slowly up the speed eventually blending at full power. Using the tamper to press down all the ingredients.
Recipe Tips & Variations
- Delicious add ins. There are a lot of healthy add ins to put into your smoothie. I have listed some ideas above. But, feel free to get creative.
- Smoothie bowl. Make it into a smoothie bowl by pouring the mixture into a bowl and topping with some fresh fruit. You may need to play around with the consistency to keep it a bit thicker.
Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of blender do I need? I recommend high-speed blenders such as a Vitamix, Blendtec, or Breville to make this smoothie. That is because a nicer blender is going to really break down all of the fruits and veggies to give you a creamy smoothie recipe.
Storage Instructions
How to refrigerate leftover lemon smoothie? Store in airtight container. It should last about 3-4 days in the fridge. Shake or stir before drinking.
