Tips for Success
- Put this dip in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before using it for the flavors to meld.
- This sauce gets its natural dill flavor from real dill. Use fresh herbs for the best flavor.
- Cut up any dill pickles you have whether they are dill pickle chips, mini pickles, pickle spears, gigantic pickles, etc. I use about 6 miniature pickles to make roughly 1/4 cup.
- As this dipping sauce sits, the liquids may separate. Just give it a stir to recombine and your sauce is as good as new.
Recipe Variations
- Thicker sauce. Substitute half of the sour cream with cream cheese, a whipped cream cheese will be easier to stir in.
- Make it spicy. Make it a bit spicier by adding in green jalapeño peppers, it’s up to you if you want to keep the seeds in or not.
- No fresh dill. This dip is the best with fresh herbs, but if you don’t have access to real dill, then you can substitute in 1/2 teaspoon of dried dill weed.
- Creamy dip. If you would rather not have big chunks of pickle, use a food processor to make if nice and creamy.
- Add onion. Slice up some purple onion or green onion or even onion powder for some added crunch and onion flavor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make this pickle sauce vegan? I have never tried the vegan version of this dip, but you could try substituting in unflavored (and unsweetened) coconut yogurt or other non-dairy yogurts instead of the sour cream.
Can I use other types of pickles? If you prefer sweet pickles over dill, use those (and the juice) instead to make a sweet pickle sauce. You can also use a different kind of pickle like bread and butter pickles.
Can I use greek yogurt? I often switch out sour cream for greek yogurt in recipes, so you should be able to use it instead here, also.
How to Store Pickle Sauce
Put any leftovers into an airtight container. It should last about 3-4 days in the fridge. If the liquid separates just stir before using.

This dip is so delicious and so easy to prepare. I served with a bunch of spicy potato chips and it was wonderful because it kind of “cool down” the spiciness of the chips.
