Hot, Soft Garlic Knot Rolls
Hot and steamy freshly baked bread is one of the best smells there is and filling the whole kitchen with bread smell is exactly how I want to live life.
Garlic knots are bite-sized buns made from a knotted piece of pizza dough. Each roll, hot out of the oven, gets brushed with a garlic butter sauce that soaks into every nook and cranny. They are simple to make are a great way to get kids involved with cooking.
These rolls will become your favorite part of every meal or eat them on their own as an appetizer with some marinara sauce. Serve with your favorite protein and with a delicious side like air fryer squash or dunk into a big bowl of our favorite garlic potato soup.
And making these little bread bites just got even easier because we are making these rolls with store bought dough. Meaning there is no kneading so you save time.
You may want to make a double batch because eating just one is nearly impossible!
What Ingredients are Needed
- Dough: We use premade dough here to make this a super easy recipe.
- Butter: I like to use unsalted butter, if you only have salted butter just cut down the on the amount of salt you add.
- Garlic: Freshly minced garlic is the highlight of these rolls. Using just garlic powder alone won’t be pungent enough, that is why we use both!
- Seasonings: You will need a variety of seasonings. These include Italian seasoning, garlic powder and salt.
- Parsley: Optional. Minced parsley will bring a fresh flavor to these garlic buns.
- Cheese: Parmesan cheese that has been freshly grated will be the best in this recipe.
- Marinara sauce: This is optional, but goes perfect to serve with the knots if you want a quick appetizer idea.
How to Cook it
STEP 1: Divide dough ball into 4 equal portions (4-ounces each). Set one of the dough pieces on a work surface and roll out into a 4 x 6-inch rectangle.
STEP 2: Cut each rectangle lengthwise into 4 strips (1 x 6-inch long). Tie each strip into a knot and tuck the tails if you like. Repeat this with all of the dough.
STEP 3: Cover dough knots lightly with plastic wrap and let come to room temperature for about 20-30 minutes.
STEP 4: Preheat the air fryer.
STEP 5: In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium-low heat, stirring as needed. Once melted, add in minced fresh garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, and garlic powder. Cook for about one minute.
STEP 6: Brush each dough ball with the butter mixture. Place them into the preheated air fryer.
STEP 7: Once rolls are cooked, brush on leftover garlic butter and sprinkle with shredded cheese and optional chopped parsley. Serve warm.
Cooking Tips and Tricks
- Use cold dough, it will be much easier to cut and tie into knots than dough that is warming up.
- When adding garlic butter, try to refrain from getting any actual garlic chunks as the garlic may burn in the air fryer. When doing the second round of buttering, then try to get some of the garlic on the buns.
- Keep space between the rolls as they cook so they don’t all smush together.
- Check on the rolls during the cooking process. All air fryer cook differently so you want to start checking on them around 6 minutes to make sure they are not burning.
- Cook in batches if you need more rolls.
Recipe Variations
- Using homemade dough. If you have a great pizza dough recipe that you love, you can definitely use that to make these rolls.
