- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 1 1/2 teapoons dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1 very small finely chopped onion or half an onion
- 4 large garlic cloves minced
- 6 hoagie rolls
- 12 slices American cheese unwrapped
- 1/3 cup mayonnaise
- tomatoes
- iceberg lettuce shredded
Preheat the oven to 350° F.
Add ground beef to a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sprinkle on salt, oregano, paprika, and pepper. Cook about 7 minutes, flipping and breaking up the beef in small pieces, it will still have a little pink.
Push the ground beef to one side of the pan and add in the diced onions, cooking them for about 5 minutes.
While the onions are cooking, place rolls cut side up on two parchment paper lined baking sheets. Toast for 5 minutes in the oven, then turn the broiler to high and toast for one more minute, watching to make sure they don’t burn. Pull them out, turn the broiler off, but keep the oven on at 350°F.
Add minced garlic to the softened onions, cook for one minute. Drain off all of the grease. Then mix the onions together with the ground beef.
Spread some mayo to one side of each one of the toasted rolls.
Scoop ⅙ of the ground beef onto the toasted roll and place back on the baking sheet. Place 2 slices of the cheese on top of the ground beef. Repeat for all six rolls.
Place the sandwiches in the oven for 1-2 minutes just until the cheese melts. Pull them out of the oven and top with tomatoes and lettuce. Serve immediately.
- Use lean ground beef for the best balance of flavor and less grease in this chopped cheese sandwich recipe.
- Add lettuce and tomatoes at the end for a fresh crunch that balances the rich beef mixture.
- Serve the sandwiches right away for the best taste, texture, and melty cheese.
- Store all leftover toppings separately in an airtight container in the fridge and assemble when ready to eat. Bread can be stored in a zip bag at room temperature.
