A classic Christmas cookie with a sweet twist, Snowball Kiss Cookies have a light sugar cookie flavor with chocolate kisses in the middle. Dusting powdered sugar on the outside makes them look like fluffy snowballs. They’re so much fun to eat and even more delightful to give way.

Baking is one of the best things to do in the winter! If you’re looking for more easy cookie recipes for your holiday cookie trays, try these. Heart Jam Cookies are filled with rich jam. Oatmeal Cranberry Walnut Cookies are made with seasonal ingredients. Frosted Peppermint Brownie Cookies are bursting with minty flavor and look jolly with their bright red frosting.

Chocolate Kiss Snowball Cookies

These wintery cookies are as much fun to eat as they are to make. As you bite into them, your lips are covered in soft powdered sugar. Then, you’ll taste the sweet cookie layer, followed by the smooth chocolate kiss in the center.

They might be as messy to eat as funnel cake, but that’s what makes them so good. If you have kids, or you’re planning a cookie-baking night with friends, make these cookies together. Everyone will have a blast rolling the dough (and eating it, let’s be honest!).

These snowball cookies are the perfect thing to add to Christmas cookie trays or to serve at holiday parties. They really do look just like fluffy snowballs! And if you’re looking for a nut-free snowball cookie recipe, you just found it! They’re made without any pecans, walnuts, or nuts of any kind.

Recipe Ingredients

  • Butter: Two sticks, or one cup, of butter. For the best flavor, use unsalted butter.
  • Powdered Sugar: This will sweeten the cookie dough and be used to coat the outside of the baked cookies.
  • Vanilla Extract: Real vanilla extract adds the perfect amount of flavor to the cookies.
  • Flour: Use all-purpose flour as the base of the cookies.
  • Salt: You only need a pinch, or ⅛ a teaspoon, of salt.
  • Chocolate Kisses: This is what sets these cookies apart from other snowball cookies. Use your favorite flavor or variety of chocolate kisses inside the center of each cookie.
All of the ingredients to make these cookies.

How to Make Snowball Kiss Cookies

Here are the basic instructions to make snowball Kiss cookies. Check out the recipe card at the bottom of this blog post with full ingredients and instructions to make it.

Step one is the metal mixing bowl with the powdered sugar and butter added in.
STEP 1: Beat your softened butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla in either a stand mixer or electric mixer. Beat at medium until it’s completely creamed together.
Step two is The mixing bowl has been scraped down after mixing together the butter and powdered sugar. The flour is added.
STEP 2: Slowly add the flour to the bowl and mix at low speed.
Step three is all the ingredients mixed together, then cover the bowl with aluminum foil or plastic and put in the fridge.
STEP 3: Seal the cookie dough with a lid or plastic wrap and chill it in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. While that’s chilling, preheat the oven and add parchment paper or silicone sheets to your baking trays.
Step four is flattening a tablespoon sized scoop of dough. Then place a Hershey kiss in the center and wrap the dough around it.
STEP 4: Scoop the cookie dough with a tablespoon-sized cookie scoop. Roll it into a ball and then use your hands to flatten the dough ball into the shape of a small disk. Place a chocolate Kiss in the middle of the disk and fold the dough around it. Make sure it’s evenly coated.
Step 5 is all of the dough balls lined up on the cookie sheet and baking them.
STEP 5: Add each cookie dough ball to the baking sheet and spread them out 2 inches apart.
Step 6 is rolling the cookies in two coats of powdered sugar.
STEP 6: Bake the snowball cookies until light brown. Let the cookies cool down, then roll each one in powdered sugar and set them on wire racks to cool completely. When completely cool roll in a second coat of powdered sugar.

Cooking Tips and Tricks

  • Don’t overmix the cookie dough. As you add the flour, stop mixing when it is completely combined, not much longer.
  • As you spread the cookie dough around the chocolate kiss, make sure it’s covered evenly on all sides.
  • Add two coats of powdered sugar. The first coat will create the layer that sticks to the cookies and the second layer sticks to the first one.

Recipe Variations

  • Make classic wedding cookies. Add a cup of ground pecans to the cookie dough to give them a nutty flavor and crumbly texture.
  • Use different varieties of Hershey’s kisses. Use white chocolate, dark chocolate, or candy cane flavored kisses.
  • Instead of vanilla extract, add mint extract. This will make them taste like peppermint candy canes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can you tell when the cookies are fully baked? It is kind of tricky to tell when they’re done because you want them to be slightly undercooked. You’ll know they’re ready when the bottoms are slightly browned.

Can I leave the Hershey’s kisses out? Yes, you can make these cookies without the kisses in the middle. They will still look like snowballs and taste like a basic cookie.

How to Store & Reheat

How to store them? Store the snowball cookies in an airtight container. Keep them at room temperature in a dark place like the pantry. They will stay fresh for about a week.

How to freeze them? Place them in a single layer on a baking tray or plate and put them in the freezer just long enough for each cookie to freeze completely. Then, place the frozen cookies in a freezer-safe bag or container and keep them in the freezer for up to six months.

Snowball Kiss Cookies

A classic Christmas cookie with a sweet twist, Snowball Kiss Cookies have a light sugar cookie flavor with chocolate kisses in the middle. Dusting powdered sugar on the outside makes them look like fluffy snowballs. They’re so much fun to eat and even more delightful to give way.
Course: Dessert and Pastries
Cuisine: American
Servings: 12

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 28 chocolate kisses unwrapped
  • 1 1/2 cup powdered sugar sifted for coating

Instructions

  • In the bowl of a stand mixer, or using a handheld mixer, beat together the soft butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla with medium speed until creamed together.
  • Drop the speed to low and carefully add in the flour and beat for about a minute until just combined. Cover the cookie dough bowl with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • With a 1 tablespoon sized cookie scoop, scoop the dough. Roll it into a ball, then flatten it out with your hands making a small round disk. Place one of the kisses in the center and fold the dough up around the kiss. Try to round out the dough some.
  • Place each dough ball 2 inches apart on the prepared cookie sheet.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes, until the bottoms are just turning brown but the cookie tops are still pale. It’s better to undercook than overcook them.
  • Let cookies cool for about 5 minutes on the baking sheet. Roll each cookie in the powdered sugar and set on wire racks to cool completely. The first layer of powdered sugar will get melty. Once completely cool, roll each cookie in powdered sugar again.

Notes

  • Don’t overmix the cookie dough. As you add the flour, stop mixing when it is completely combined, not much longer.
  • As you spread the cookie dough around the chocolate kiss, make sure it’s covered evenly on all sides.
  • Makes 24 cookies. Store the snowball cookies in an airtight container. Keep them at room temperature in a dark place like the pantry. They will stay fresh for about a week.
