Smoked Sausage and Potatoes
Any time I get a chance to bring out my vintage crockpot, I am doing it. And an amazing dinner will be made! I love crock pot dinners because you can make prepare everything and toss it all into the slow cooker in the morning and dinner is ready right on time!
You have the option to stir the sausage and potatoes halfway through the cooking time if you are home. But, if you are like me (living a little risky) and like to leave your crock pot cooking away at home while you go to work or run errands like I do, the meal does not need to be stirred.

What to Serve with Sausage and Potatoes
Just add a vegetable on the side to make this a nice rounded meal. When I make this potato recipe I will serve it will a huge salad. I like to add shredded carrots, juicy tomatoes, cucumber, and who can live without croutons.
I’ll also make squash and zucchini in the air fryer, air fryer roasted broccoli, or baked asparagus with parmesan. Might as well throw in some more carbs and try out our favorite rolls or try making your own French bread!
What are the Best Potatoes to Use?
When choosing potatoes for this dish, you want to get potatoes that are a little heavy and firm. Make sure to stay away from potatoes that are wrinkled or overly blemished. Do not buy potatoes that have a hint of green to them, they are toxic and can lead to an upset stomach.
Gold potatoes work the absolute best in this recipe and it’s what I normally use. The potatoes have a creaminess and butteriness to them that is hard to beat. I like to peel these potatoes but, the skin on these is actually thin enough that they do not have to be peeled.
I also enjoy baby red potatoes and a big bonus is that those also don’t need to be peeled. Using russet potatoes works well in this recipe, but I highly encourage you to peel them because the thicker skin may throw off the texture of this crock pot dinner.
What is the Best Kind of Sausage to Use?
For this recipe I use a pre-cooked smoked turkey sausage, but you could also try smoked pork sausage or Italian sausage. I like that the turkey sausage is a little healthier and lower in fat. Or if you like try out knockwurst (or knackwurst), a smoked Polish sausage.
Can I Use Raw Sausage in the Crock Pot
If you are wondering if you can use raw sausage in the crock pot, the answer is yes. There are two types of sausages, those that are fresh, like bratwurst (brats) or kielbasa and those that are pre-cooked like smoked sausage or knockwurst.
If you choose to use raw sausage for this recipe, it will cook completely in the slow cooker for 6-8 hours on low. It helps the cooking process and adds to the flavor of the sausage if you sauté the sausage quickly on all sides to brown it up a little. Then slice it up and add it to the recipe to be cooked.
You may end up with extra grease in the sausage and potatoes if cooking it from raw. I haven’t personally cooked this particular recipe with raw sausage before.
What size Crock Pot do I Need for this Recipe?
The best sized crock pot to use here is a 3 – 3.5 quart. If you have a larger crock pot than that, I recommend doubling the recipe.
Crock Pot Sausage and Potato Cooking Time
The nice thing about this sausage potato recipe is that you can adjust the cook time. It can be cooked on low or high depending on your needs.
Cook the sausage and potatoes on low for 6-8 hours or cook on high temperature setting for 3-4 hours.
Recipe Ingredients
- Potatoes: I use gold potatoes, but you can use red potatoes or russet potatoes (peeled). They will need to be quartered or if you are using really big potatoes slice the potatoes into thirds and cut those into fourths.
- Sausage: Use a smoked, pre-cooked turkey sausage that is U shaped. Cut into 1/2″ slices.
- Cream Cheese: I’ve only made this recipe with full fat cream cheese. The cream cheese will need to be softened.
- Soup: A can of cream of celery soup.
- Ranch: You will need a packet of dry ranch dressing/dip mix.

- Soften cream cheese. Make sure the cream cheese is soft so that it easily mixes with the soup and dry ranch dressing.
- Use a different flavored soup. Try a twist on the recipe by using cream of chicken soup, cream of broccoli, or cream of mushroom instead of using cream of celery soup.
- More sausage. Add a second link of sausage (so 2 lbs instead of 1) if you want an even meatier recipe.
- Make it cheesy. Add some freshly shredded cheese into the pot right before serving.
- Add veggies. You can add in some peas or green beans. Just add a can of drained veggies along with the potatoes and sausage.
- Make it spicy. If you like things spicy try adding in a little cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to peel the potatoes? If you are using a gold potato or red potato, they do not have to be peeled. I do recommend peeling russet potatoes if you are using them.

Make Ahead, Storage, and Freezing Instructions
How to refrigerate crock pot sausage and potatoes? Let the sausage and potatoes cool and put in an air tight container. It should last about 3-4 days in the fridge.
How do you reheat sausage and potatoes? Heat crock pot sausage and potatoes in the microwave for 3-4 minutes, stirring halfway through. Keep heating until heated to your desired temperature. Exact heating time will be based on the amount of leftovers you have.
How to freeze slow cooker sausage and potatoes? I don’t recommend freezing this recipe because the cream cheese in the sauce will become grainy after being thawed.
