Polar Bear Drink
If you are a fan of the mint chocolate flavor combination like I am, then you are going to love this polar bear shot. There is just something about that sweet mint chocolate mix that I love.
It is reminiscent of those chocolate mint Girl Scout cookies, I always eat an entire sleeve all to myself.
Those peppermint patty candies with that dark chocolate outer layer and that creamy cool center. Yum, peppermint patties.
Or that cool minty green ice cream with the crisp chunks of chocolate scattered about. That and peppermint ice cream were my favorite as a kid.
It is super easy to make this drink for just one, as well as for a crowd of people and those arctic theme winter parties. But, I will warn you when this polar bear attacks you are going to want to hibernate and take some group naps, lol.

What is a Polar Bear Shot?
The white polar bear shot is a drink that is made with peppermint alcohol and chocolate alcohol. They are so easy to make, too. Just measure out the shots, pour them into the shaker over ice, and shake. That is it! The best thing about this shot is that you only need two ingredients.
What are Polar Bear Shots Made of?
This peppermint paddy shot is an easy combination of two alcohols. All you need is white creme de cacao and peppermint schnapps.
How Strong is the Polar Bear Shot?
The strength of this drink will depend on the alcohol that you buy. Peppermint schnapps can come in a variety of proofs, typically between 30-100 proof. The amount of alcohol is half of the proof number. So 100 proof schnapps will be 50% alcohol.
Bear Shot Ingredients
Here are the basic ingredients to make this cocktail shot. For the full ingredient amounts check out the recipe card at the bottom of this blog post.
- White Creme de Cacao
- Peppermint Schnapps – It’s similar to creme de menthe but not as sweet. For extra kick, I use 100-proof peppermint schnapps, which means it’s 50% alcohol. It has a higher alcohol content. If you don’t want to use 100-proof schnapps you can use 30 proof (15% alcohol), or 60 proof (30% alcohol).

- Jigger
- 1oz shot glasses
- Cocktail shaker
How to Make Polar Bear Shot
- Fill the shaker with ice.
- Measure out the schnapps and the creme de cacao.
- Pour in the peppermint schnapps and the white crème de cacao to the shaker.
- Shake for at least 10 seconds and pour into the shot glasses.
What other Mint Liqueurs Can be Used?
If you don’t want to use peppermint schnapps or you happen to have another mint schnapps on hand, you can try one of these and still get that mint chocolate taste that we are aiming for.
- Rumple Minze – A clear mint alcohol that will look great in this shot because it will keep it clear.
- Green Creme de Menthe – Another tasty option, but it will turn your shot green.
How to turn it into a Polar Bear Drink
If you don’t want to take this recipe as a shot, good news it can be turned into a polar bear cocktail that you can sip. Just make the shot recipe, but double ingredients. Pour 2oz of crème de cacao and 2oz of peppermint schnapps into the shaker filled with ice. Shake for 10 seconds and pour it into a cocktail glass filled with ice cubes or a martini glass with no ice.
Recipe Tips & Variations
- Chilled shot with frozen glasses. Serve these in frozen shot glasses stored in the coldest part of the freezer for an even chillier drink.
- Different alcohol for schnapps. Switch the peppermint schnapps out for white Creme de Menthe. Using the green crème de menthe will turn your polar bear drink green.
- Heavy cream. Add a splash of heavy cream to make this drink white in color and a little creamy.
- Weaken the shot. Water it down with a little cold water if its too strong.
- Different alcohol for creme de cocoa. Use a white chocolate Irish cream liqueur in place of the white Creme de cocoa to make this a white polar bear shot. Dark crème de cacao can be substituted for the the white version. But, just keep in mind that the dark creme de cacao will turn the drink brown.

How long to shake a cocktail? The best way to ensure that the liquids get nice and cold, is to shake them for at least 10 seconds in the shaker.
Do I need a cocktail shaker? I am a big fan of improvisation, that is basically making do with what you have. In the past, I have used a Yeti tumbler with a lid that had a hole in the top (I just covered the hole with a paper towel) or a mason jar with a screw on lid. So, no you don’t have to use a cocktail shaker but you do need some kind of “shaker.”
