Ingredients

Apple Filling

  • 3 3/4 pounds Granny Smith baking apples peeled, cored, & cut into 1/2 inch chunks
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Crumble Topping

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, cold cut into cubes

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375° F. Butter or use a little non stick cooking spray in a 13x9-inch baking pan.
  • In a large bowl, mix together the brown sugar, salt, corn starch and cinnamon. Add in apples and mix well to coat. Dump apple mixture into the baking dish and spread them out in an even layer.
  • In a medium bowl, mix together all purpose flour, white sugar, salt, baking powder, and cinnamon. Cut in the cold butter with a pastry cutter or two forks into the dry ingredients until the mixture creates pea-sized pieces.
  • Sprinkle crumb topping over the apples.
  • Bake for 40-50 minutes. The filling should be bubbling and thickened and the topping is golden brown.
  • Let the whole thing cool for 15-20 minutes. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream and drizzle with caramel sauce if you like.

Notes

  • Don't over-bake. You don't want the topping to get too brown. In the last 15 minutes of baking, keep a close eye on the crumble. Bake it until it is lightly browned on top and the filling is thick and bubbling.
  • Using cold butter. Cold butter is going to give you a nice crisp topping. Warm butter or even melted butter can cause the topping to spread more, which is not what you want. Cold butter will allow it to stay in clumps.
  • Apple crumble will last in an airtight container for 3-5 days in the refrigerator.
