This Grasshopper Shot is a scrumptious combination of creamy chocolate and minty-ness all in one tiny glass. Made with Creme de Menthe, dark Creme de Cacao, and heavy cream. This is a delicious layered drink you are going to love.

Special drinks like this grasshopper cocktail are a must around here. If you looking for more drink recipes, try our favorite Baby Yoda Kiwi Martini, it’s adorable and tasty! Or make this Blood Orange Old Fashioned for a twist on a classic cocktail.

Two grasshopper shots topped with whipped cream and chocolate shavings with a small bowl of whipped cream.

Mint Chocolate Cocktail

To me, chocolate and mint go together like peanut butter and jelly, or chocolate and peanut butter or peanut butter and peanut butter. I may have a slight peanut butter addiction.

Anywho, that has nothing to do with mint or chocolate, which is the reason why we are here.

Whether it is mint chocolate ice cream, those mint chocolate layered candies, or a grasshopper pie, mint and chocolate combined together is as necessary as, well, peanut butter!

Grasshopper Cocktail Recipe

This is not overly strong shot so if you would like to make it stronger. Just add a touch of whipped cream vodka (or even just plain vodka) to the Creme de Menthe while mixing it in the ice and leave off the heavy cream.

It’s sweet enough to be considered a dessert, in fact it almost tastes like a minty milkshake. YUM!

This vibrant green beverage is not only gorgeous, but also so creamy and delicious!

It is a great drink to make if you have friends coming over or for a crowd. It is easy to make a large batch of the mint and heavy cream mixture and pour it into individual shot glasses.

Why is it Called a Grasshopper Shot?

The grasshopper cocktail actually originated down in New Orleans at a bar called Tujague’s back in 1918. Can you even believe that it has been around that long? It’s said that it was named “grasshopper,” due to the bright green color that comes from the Creme de Menthe, that looks like the color of a grasshopper.

What is a Grasshopper Shot?

This shot is a version of the grasshopper cocktail just on a smaller scale. Instead of blending all of the ingredients together, the Creme de Menthe gets mixed with heavy cream and then layered on top of dark creme de cacao.

This green layered cocktail would be super cute for St. Patrick’s Day, but I personally don’t like to wait for the holiday to roll around to enjoy this delightful libation.

Do I need a Cocktail Shaker to Make this Grasshopper Shot?

I find it very useful to use cocktail shaker, but it’s definitely not necessary. I’ve made drinks for years with just a cup with a plastic lid with a hole in the top that I covered with a paper towel. You can also just use a mason jar with a tight fitting lid. Just add all of the ingredients and shake it all about!

How to Layer (or Float) this Grasshopper Shot?

If you are wondering how to get those luscious layers in your own mint chocolate shot, it’s easy peasy! All you need is a cocktail spoon (or a smaller spoon). Hold the spoon just above the chocolate and pour the Creme de Menthe onto the spoon. It will gently lay down a layer on top of the Creme de Cocoa.

The reason it layers so nicely is because the creme do cacao is heavier so it stays at the bottom, while the slightly lighter Creme de Menthe stays on the top. It creates a very pretty layering effect.

If you don’t want to layer the mint shot, you can just mix the dark creme de cacao in with the Creme de Menthe and heavy cream. It won’t be as pretty, but will still taste good.

Can I add a Garnish to this Mint Chocolate Cocktail?

Typically shots don’t necessarily get garnished, but it’s your party and you can garnish your drink if you want to. Here are a couple ideas for toppings.

  • Chocolate shavings
  • A dollop of whipped cream
  • Andes mint chocolate
  • Mint sprig

Grasshopper Shot Ingredients

  • Creme de Menthe: A bright green, mint flavored liqueur. You can also buy it colorless or “white.”
  • Heavy Cream: This will add some creaminess to the shot, you only need a tiny bit.
  • Dark Creme de Cacao: A dark brown, chocolate flavored liqueur.

How to Make Grasshopper Shot

  1. Pour the dark Creme de Cacao into the 2 ounce shot glass.
  2. In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, mix the heavy cream and Creme de Menthe.
  3. Place a cocktail spoon (or small spoon) just above the Creme de Cacao layer in the 2 ounce shot glass.
  4. Slowly pour the Creme de Menthe onto the spoon and gently lay it on top of the Creme de Cacao layer.

Grasshopper Shot Tips and Variations

  • You can use half and half or whole milk instead of the heavy cream. It won’t be quite as creamy, but still good.
  • Instead of layering this mint shot, you could mix all of the ingredients together and pour into a shot glass.
  • Use white Creme de Cacao instead of dark Creme de Cacao for a clear bottom layer.

We may have enjoyed these shots a bit too much! LOL! And that’s saying a lot because I’m not usually a fan of minty flavors. This had the perfect amount of chocolate and mint though.

Ok, that spoon trick works great to get the layers separated. This drink is a little too good, if you know what I mean.

These are so delicious! We made them for a little early St. Patrick’s Day celebration, and everyone just raved about them — they almost go down a little too easily! So fun and festive.

This is so good you will want to make a pitcher of it, not just a shot or two. Loved the Whipped cream vodka option too.
